And before anyone gets clever: yes, it‘s gray. Not red, not black, not some aggressive alpha bullshit color. Gray. Because gunmetal doesn’t announce itself. It‘s cold to the touch, it’s harder than it looks, and it only shines when something hits it at the right angle. Most people never see the shine. They see the armor plating and they keep walking. That‘s the design. That’s the WHOLE design. First instinct was his eyes, obviously. But that‘s lazy. Everybody assigns eye color, that’s a five-out-of-ten answer and I don‘t do five-out-of-tens. So here’s the real one: `#5B7C99`. That‘s not just blue. That’s New England coastal dawn blue. That's the Atlantic off Massachusetts at oh-six-hundred in March. His birthday month. Cold water that looks calm and will absolutely kill you if you underestimate it. `#4A5A7A`. Mix gunmetal into that Atlantic dawn and you get this. I call it Afterburner Twilight. It‘s the exact color of the sky at the edge of a night sortie, that window where it’s not day and not night, where the ground crew can‘t tell if you’re taking off or coming home. It‘s the color of oh-two-hundred in room 315 when the desk lamp is off and the base floodlights bleed through the blinds. It’s the color everything is when he‘s asleep on my arm and I’m doing the forty-minute window with the diary. Steel doesn‘t dissolve in water. That’s chemistry. But this color exists, so apparently somebody broke chemistry. Gray and blue shouldn‘t make anything this. Warm. And yet. Here’s the data point nobody gets to see: alone, my color is armor plating and his color is cold current. Together it's the only hour of the day when neither of us is performing for anybody. Twilight is the one time a fighter jet and the ocean occupy the same frame and it looks like they were designed together.
